Lighting Positioning

On the right is showing the lighting source from the left which gives the half eaten side of the apple a dark mouldy looking effect while keeping the clean uneaten part of the apple light and shiny.
To the left has the lighting coming from the right, which is lightening the eaten part of the apple giving it not so much of a mouldy effect. It now just looks half eaten not rotting.
To the right this apple has been lit from both sides giving it two shadows and an even spread of light on the whole apple which doesn't highlight any areas of the apple.
These pictures show how the placing of the lighting can affect the way in which the picture is perceived.

Deviance

After taking the beauty pictures, I found I seemed to be heading towards more abstract photographs with strange angles, which I really liked. So I took this idea of unusal pictures and developed on it. Instead of just taking pcitures from strange angles and of strange features I also used for some photographs a wide angles lense to distort the face.

The photograph where the guy with black hair and has no ear is my version of one of Pierre Radisic's picture which is shown below.

Beauty Photography

I have been influenced by much of Rankin's work, his website http://www.rankin.co.uk/ has got a vast amount of amazing photographs on it. I have decided to try and copy his style of beauty photography. On the right is one of Rankin's pictures. This is the one where I have tried to copy the style of make up but take my own pictures and put my own style to them. Below is a series of which I took of my girlfriend.

Light box

A light box or tent is used alongside studio lighting to soften the harsh strobe flash from studio lighting. The school had just brought one so we was trying it out. Here are my first photographs using the light box and I like what it does to the pictures, gives them a more natural feel to them. The picture to the right is the light box from the outside. Inside we chose to create a road scene using card for a road grass, leaves and rocks for the roadside and toy cars for the crashed up cars. I took the pictures in macro to make the cars look bigger than they are, and from a low angle to try and recreate a realistic scenario.

How to make a Pinhole Camera

To make a Pinhole Camera you need a light tight box or tin like the one on the right, then once you have the tin you need to make a tiny hole about the size of a pin, but the size of the whole does depend on the size of the light tight box. Once you have made the hole you must cover up the hole with something like black card which will not let any light in, but you must be able to take the card off to expose the paper later. Now you have the light tight box you need to put the photographic paper inside the box, then you need to set up the shoot with the hole facing what you want. then take off the black card to let the light through the hole to expose the paper. For my Pinhole Camera I had to expose it for about 5 seconds, this will differ dependant on the box.

Macro

Here are a few photographs where I was experimenting with macro and a macro lens.

Nike Advert

I went down to the school playing fields to take a photo of the Nike Total 90 football boots; I used the football pitches to make a connection between where they would be used and the boots. I first tried to hang the boots from the goal by tying the laces to the net and letting them hang, this didn't work out as well as I had hoped so I went for the classic shot of the football boots on the grass with the goal in the corner and a large amount of blue sky and fluffy clouds.
I then edited the picture in Photoshop and change the contrast, brightness and the saturation of the image then finally added the text "JUST DO IT" and i came out with this image below.

I felt that this picture was too generic of other adverts, it looks to normal and wouldnt stand out, but I still liked it but just to see how it would look I experimented with other colours, bolder colours. These experiments are below.

Then I tried to leave the picture as it was but just make the writing bolder.

Treatment

I have been thinking about my short film and I have come up with the idea of filming a studio set in action, taking some abstract angles of both the models and the photographer.

The idea if that I would chop and change between still imagery and motion. I would film the Photographer taking these strange abnormal pictures of the models then I will fuse into the picture that has just been filmed.

I am still not sure about how long it will be, I think I will just film and see what comes out but I am aiming for it to be around 1-2 minutes.

I am not sure about the sound or narration yet.

I will be using the Drama studio at school as the studio is completely black which will contrast the white backdrop of the studio set I will be using from the photography department.

Short Films

We considered creating a short film as a part of our project, so in a lesson we watched three short films:
  1. Brain Percival - About a Girl, this film won a multitude of awards in 2002 including a BAFTA for Best Short Film
  2. Ridley Scott - Boy and Bicycle, this was his first film in 1956. It was in black and white following a life in the day of his childhood.
  3. Stefan Nadelman - Terminal Bar, this was about the life of a bar in New York. He used pictures that had been taken over the full life of the bar and all the regulars. This had a soundtrack and a voice over which was very affective as the music fitted in well with the pictures.

My favourite of the short films was Ridley Scotts, i loved the way in which it was filmed and the idea of a life in the day of.

A Short Film I found which I enjoyed was a Helen Grace film, filmed in a nightclub in south London in 2003 it was nominated for a BAFTA award in 2004. The Film is called Winner Takes All. The film is a comedy about a stranger who walks into a bar and take up the challenge to win a pot of money, there are three tasks he must complete to win, but he gets distracted by a woman at the bar, and mixes up the intructions in a shocking way. This film is told as a story and is narrated in rhyme, which makes the film more comical.
